Summary

In September, 1964 a cavalcade of motorbikes ripped through the city of Monterey, California。 It was a trip destined to make Hell's Angels household names across America, infamous for their violent, drunken rampages and feared for the destruction left in their wake。

Enter Hunter S。 Thompson, the master of counter-culture journalism who alone had the ability and stature to ride with the Angels on their terms。 In this hair-raising expose, he journeys with the last outlaws of the American frontier。

A mixture of journalism, story-telling and sheer bravado, Hell's Angels is Hunter S。 Thompson at full throttle。

A deeply introspective take on crime and criminals known as Hell’s Angels。Which makes this book a very good lens into modern day America。 The last 20-30 pages explain society in a nutshell。 It has been happening probably since the earliest if civilizations and will keep happening。 Names change。 Colors change。 Places change。 The poor uneducated masses will waver between subjugation and rebellion。 Most often not knowing what extremity of the cycle they are at, but they will always be there。

Love Hunter S。 Thompson's writing style, and emersion form of journalism。 Not a huge fan of when he ceases to write and just has dictated recordings typed out。 Love Hunter S。 Thompson's writing style, and emersion form of journalism。 Not a huge fan of when he ceases to write and just has dictated recordings typed out。 。。。more

Set the stage for Lester Bangs and any journalist who himself/herself into the narrative to enhance the story。 Groundbreaking, masterful, dark and entertaining

Thompson hadn't embraced Gonzo journalism with a drug-induced fervor yet but he danced with it here。 The last 20 pages are some of his best work。 Thompson hadn't embraced Gonzo journalism with a drug-induced fervor yet but he danced with it here。 The last 20 pages are some of his best work。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 "Hell of a ride" seems like an appropriate way to describe this book。 This is the first of any of Thompsons work that I have read。 My only other exposure to him was through the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is probably not the most honest way to really understand his work。 Since I've taken up an interest in motorcycles and this being Thompson's first book, I thought it was best to start with this one。 To the average reader, the contents of this book may be hard to stomach。 Thompson "Hell of a ride" seems like an appropriate way to describe this book。 This is the first of any of Thompsons work that I have read。 My only other exposure to him was through the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is probably not the most honest way to really understand his work。 Since I've taken up an interest in motorcycles and this being Thompson's first book, I thought it was best to start with this one。 To the average reader, the contents of this book may be hard to stomach。 Thompson does not sugar coat the details of who the Hells Angels are and what they are capable of doing。 However, if you do find the nerve to pick up this book, you'll be rewarded with Thompson's strange way with words。 Some parts left me a little bored, but for good reason。 Do to the level of controversy revolving around the Hells Angels, there are a lot of fine details that mustn't be skimmed over。 I feel if anyone else had written and told the same story from the same perspective, this book would fall short of anything worth reading。 But that isn't the case here。 The case is that either Hunter S。 Thompson is either brilliant, or a lunatic。 Probably both。 。。。more

Hell's Angels, at times, read like an extended news article。 With repetitive mentions of bodyweight and uneventful tangents, I often found myself getting through the book with not much excitement。The book does however give the reader a fascinating description of the Angels day-to-day lives and an understanding of their inside politics。 It's unique in its forgiving view of a people, who in reality, have very little but themselves。 It isn't an apologist piece by any means, and you will be able to Hell's Angels, at times, read like an extended news article。 With repetitive mentions of bodyweight and uneventful tangents, I often found myself getting through the book with not much excitement。The book does however give the reader a fascinating description of the Angels day-to-day lives and an understanding of their inside politics。 It's unique in its forgiving view of a people, who in reality, have very little but themselves。 It isn't an apologist piece by any means, and you will be able to make up your own mind by the time you finish reading。So, if you have an interest in gangs and debauchery, give this a go。 The Hunter charm shines through and I personally wasn't disappointed。 。。。more

Fantastic book! I read the whole thing in less than 3 days。 Hunter keeps every page interesting by interjecting tons of anecdotes in chapters that would be boring without them。 Somehow he manages to bridge from one topic to the next; violence, retaliation, loneliness, brotherhood, drugs, politics, homosexuality, fame, money, chickenshitness, provocations。 A definitive image of the almost-original Hell's Angels。 Are they unsympathetic sons-of-bitches? Hell yes。 Anarcho-fascists without much intel Fantastic book! Definitely。 Interesting。。。 By the end of the book you know everything you will ever need or want to know about the Angels, but what a ride it was。 There is something about the pathetic, though active nature of them operating as an organization that is somehow fascinating to me, especially before the major fame hit them。 Let it be known that I did not seek out this book because of the Angels, but because I loved what the author had done with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas。 This is a very different fish, but no less enjoyable。 So far I have read two pieces of Thompson's bibliography, and will gladly add more to that :-) 。。。more

The Edge 。。。 There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over。 The others - the living - are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled pack, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to do when it came to choose between Now and Later。

It was basically just a really long article。 Well written and interesting but I would zone out sometimes and stop reading。 I love Thompson and his involvement was cool to read。

Some parts are great but it feels really long。 I don’t think his writings about the hells angels suits a 200+ page book format。 Preferred reading his stuff in singular articles。

I read this masterpiece for the third time。 Thompson's epic telling of the infamous motorcycle club, although published in 1967, says much about the evolution to today's disaffected whites。 He was among the first of the New Journalism authors, writing in a first-person narrative style also known as "gonzo journalism。" I read this masterpiece for the third time。 Thompson's epic telling of the infamous motorcycle club, although published in 1967, says much about the evolution to today's disaffected whites。 He was among the first of the New Journalism authors, writing in a first-person narrative style also known as "gonzo journalism。" 。。。more

For the past year, I've been enthralled by the mystique of outlaw motorcycle club members as portrayed in the television series, Sons of Anarchy。 My husband suggested I read this book to know what they were really like。 I'd never read Hunter S。 Thompson before。 His book reads like a bit like a newspaper article, since journalism was his initial career。 It's not the book I would choose to read, mainly because the characters and activities are 1960s and gritty。 From a historial perspective, this i For the past year, I've been enthralled by the mystique of outlaw motorcycle club members as portrayed in the television series, Sons of Anarchy。 My husband suggested I read this book to know what they were really like。 I'd never read Hunter S。 Thompson before。 His book reads like a bit like a newspaper article, since journalism was his initial career。 It's not the book I would choose to read, mainly because the characters and activities are 1960s and gritty。 From a historial perspective, this is a treasure。 It captures not only the motorcycle scene but the communities afraid of it 。。。more

- a pretty hefty portion of the book (about the first half) is just Hunter telling stories he wasn’t there for and that was really boring, but eventually he got involved with the Angels and then it got a little bit better。- the last 20 out of the total 273 pages are fucking fire; super inspiring stuff。- great quote in that last little section: “As you were, I was As I am, you will be。” (H。 Himmler)
